Vintage Fenton Mandarin Red Macaroon Cookie Jar #1681-6 1/2 aka Big Cookies

  
For your consideration is a near antique cookie jar made in Fenton's rare Mandarin Red (also Venetian Red) colored glass. The pattern is Macaroon aka "Big Cookies". It measures 6 1/2 inches tall to the top of the lid not counting the finial and 7 1/2 inches tall overall. It is almost 7 inches across the handles, 5 1/2 inches across the top of the jar, and 5 3/4 inches across the base. It is in excellent condition with no chips or cracks. There is minor shelf wear on the bottom as expected. There are the usual wrinkles (straw marks) on the bottom and top of the lid and there is one as made open surface bubble. It is at 4:00 on the side of one knob visible in the 6th picture. These pieces were mold blown and not perfect as in machine made pieces.

The handle is of the period but is not original to the jar. It has some staining and a couple breaks but serves the purpose. The Mandarin Red color comes from gold in the glass. When glass with gold is reheated the colors vary with temperature change. This piece was mold blown and the varying temperatures of the glass give it a marbling effect.

This was the desired outcome and it shows most on the lid and the base. The cost of gold no longer allows for the making of this color of glass and hasn't for nearly 50 years. Either the Big or the Little Cookies are both extremely rare in Mandarin Red. Thank you for your interest and please Check out my other items.
