Antique Bohemian 18 Mantle Luster Lamp. White Cut-to-Cranberry, Crystal Prisms

  

Item under consideration is a beautiful, elegant, very rare Antique (Late 1800s) Hand Decorated Mantle Luster Lamp. Pattern has hand painted enamel Floral & Portrait Designs and Gold Scrolling/Accents with Crystal, B rilliant-Cut, Scalloped Edged Notched, Spear Prisms. The prism collection consists of a mix of 1- piece and 2-piece Crystal.

The Luster's design was created by hand-cutting the white cased crystal to the layered transparent cranberry crystal, adding hand decorated enamel floral and portrait designs with added gold scrolling and accents. The brass base consists of a very detailed custom design.

Lusters were popular upscale home decorations during the Victorian era. Overall expensive, they were found in the homes of the wealthy and usually displayed in a prominent place such as a parlor fireplace mantel, sideboard or console table. The lusters were often used as candle holders as the sparkling prisms would help amplify light in candle-lit interiors.

This luxurious luster is the essence of 19th century Victorian elegance and style. The initial design concept of the Luster was to accommodate candle light, because electricity was not yet commonly available at the time of fabrication. The center body of the Luster is hollow to accommodate water, which extinguish the inserted candle when the flame burned low. This Luster underwent electrification in the 1930 s consisting of adding an electrical power cord and lamp socket. Part of the modification was the addition of a custom made very intricately detailed brass base fitted to the bottom of the Luster.

This added a uniquely attractive element to the Luster design(see photo #12). The combined total weight is substantial at over 8 pounds. Height including brass base- 18 inch. Height of luster, excluding brass base-13 3/4 inch.
