A truly amazing chess set like no other - well in fact like only a few others since this is from a limited edition of only 50 sets. It was created for Baccarat's 250th anniversary in 2014 in a collaboration with Nendo, the Japanese design studio. Each set takes 200 hours to hand cut and is created in Baccarat's traditional, Harcourt glass design but with a smooth modern twist, Nendo designing the king in the shape of a crown. The queen in the shape of her robe's hem and the bishops with the shape of their mitres. The pieces are formed in a stunning midnight blue and clear crystal and although I've never felt an attraction to glass, these you really want to hold. The transparent board is slightly elevated which allows light to flow and illuminate the pieces from all angles. I have photographed this both on the floor and on the cardboard from the packaging to give you an idea of what it looks like on different colour surfaces. This is a large chess set, measuring 89cm square.
It comes in it's original red, Baccarat branded packing box. It has been in storage since so, unfortunately the box top has some marks (see pictures). However, it is only the packing box and is not intended to be packed away but given it's own table to both be on display and lure opponents for the evening.
